Here are some tips:
Restaurant Nomads (Rozengracht 133). Check this site for info http://www.worldsbestbars.com/city/amsterdam/nomads-amsterdam.htm I have been there lately and thought it was a great place to eat and relax. The restaurant is situated in a part of Amsterdam that is called Jordaan. This is a great place to wonder around, especially when it nice weather. Lots of terrases!

Restaurant De Jaren (Nieuwe Doelenstraat 20-22). You can check it out on http://www.diningcity.com/ams/dejaren/index.htm Used to be one of my favorite when I was studying in Amsterdam.
If you want to relax in a park then you definitely have to go to the Vondelpark. A green haven in a bussy city.
And the two things Amsterdam is wellknown for ;0) you can find almost anywhere!

Avoid the Kalverstraat (my opinion). Is very bussy and very toeristy. No fun!
Then for some fun out of the ordinary shops go to the "9 streets" (9 straatjes). You will find these in between the Singel, Herengracht, Keizersgracht en Prinsengracht. The 9 streets are Reestraat, Hartenstraat, Gast-Huismolensteeg, Berenstraat, Wolvenstraat, Oude Spiegelstraat, Runstraat, Huidenstraat en Wijde Heisteeg.

Oh yes, A'dam is best when you walk or use the trams. For the trams you can get a pass. Ask at the toursit office (central station) for more info as they change it quite often. And if you are a culture person, do not forget to visit the Anne Frank museum! Rijksmusem en Van Gogh Museum are also nice but very big and expensive. But of course also very nice museums to visit.
